EV Charging Cost Calculator UK
This EV charging cost calculator works out what it costs to charge an electric car at home: your miles, your car’s efficiency in miles per kWh and your electricity rate. It starts at the Ofgem Q4 2026 cap average of 26.32p per kWh, and compares the result with a petrol or diesel car at this week’s pump prices.
How the EV charging cost calculator works
Divide the miles you drive by your car’s efficiency in miles per kWh to get the electricity you need, then multiply by your unit rate. Cost per mile is simply the unit rate divided by the car’s miles per kWh. The petrol or diesel comparison converts miles per gallon into litres (one imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres) and prices them at the DESNZ weekly average.
What the calculator leaves out
It models home charging only, with no allowance for energy lost while charging, so the true figure is a little higher. Public chargers are priced by each network and are not included. The standing charge is left out too, because you pay it whether or not you charge a car. Electricity carries no VAT on electricity from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, and the cap rate already reflects that.
