How the energy direct debit calculator works

A supplier forecasts your Direct Debit over a year. This calculator does the same: it prices a year of your electricity and gas at your region’s cap unit rates and standing charges, adds anything you owe or takes off any credit, and divides by 12. Ofgem expects suppliers to bring an account in credit back towards a zero balance over the next 12 months, and says a debit balance is commonly added and smoothed over the next 12 months.

Why your supplier’s figure can differ

The calculator assumes today’s cap rates last all year, but the cap changes every quarter: the next one, for January–March 2027, is announced by 25 November 2026. Your supplier also uses its own estimate of your usage, which a fresh meter reading can change, and a fixed tariff has its own rates. If the gap is large, give your supplier a meter reading and ask it to review your Direct Debit.

Energy Direct Debit Calculator: common questions

Your supplier estimates a year of energy use, prices it at your tariff, adjusts for any credit or debit on your account and spreads the total over 12 monthly payments. Ofgem says Direct Debits are forecast over a 12-month period and expects suppliers to review them regularly as prices change.

Ofgem points to a few common reasons: prices rising at a quarterly cap change, coming off a cheaper fixed tariff onto a standard variable one, a debit balance being spread over the next 12 months, and estimated bills being corrected by an actual meter reading.

Ofgem expects suppliers to reduce the Direct Debit of an account in credit, with the aim of bringing the balance back close to zero over the next 12 months. This calculator does the same with the credit you enter.

No. It uses the Ofgem price cap rates for your region, which apply to standard variable tariffs paid by Direct Debit. If you are on a fixed tariff, the answer is a guide to the cap, not to your contract.
