What you get for the money
The headline figure is dominated by system size. The Energy Saving Trust puts an average domestic system at around 4.5 kWp (roughly 12 panels) for about £6,100, while a standard 4 kW system is commonly quoted at £5,500–£8,000+ depending on panels, roof access and scaffolding.
Add battery storage and the total typically rises to £8,000–£14,000+. A battery on its own adds roughly £2,500–£10,000 (a 4–5 kWh unit is around £3,000–£5,000), but it lets you use far more of your own solar — often cutting import bills by a further 30% or more — and usually brings your payback forward.
